Bail Commissioner and Former Prosecutor
Prosecutorial Experience
For fourteen (14) years from April of 1994 to January of 2008, I served as the Assistant Solicitor for the Town of Little Compton and my duties included prosecuting misdemeanor offenses such as drunk driving and domestic violence that were committed within the Town. From December of 2002 to January of 2005, I also served as the Assistant Solicitor for the Town of Portsmouth and handled the misdemeanor prosecutions including drunk driving and domestic violence. I have also served as a Special Prosecutor for the prosecution of drunk driving and domestic violence cases in the Towns of Burrillville, Middletown and Portsmouth.
This experience as a Municipal Prosecutor and Special Prosecutor for different communities throughout the State has provided me with a unique opportunity to handle these difficult cases from both sides and to establish strong working relationships with the law enforcement community. I am able to utilize my experience as a Prosecutor to obtain the best outcome possible for my criminal defense clients.
Judicial Experience – Bail Commissioner and Municipal Court Judge
Since August of 1996, I have served as a Newport County Bail Commissioner. Bail Commissioners serve a vital role in our system of justice because they have the responsibility to act as a neutral magistrate at the initiation of criminal proceedings, to make probable cause determinations, to set and take bail at special arraignments, to sign arrest warrants, and to commit individuals to the Adult Correctional Institution "ACI".
From December of 2003 to December of 2005, I served as the Municipal Court Judge for the Town of Tiverton. As the Municipal Court Judge, I had original jurisdiction to hear and to decide cases involving local minimum housing standards, traffic violations, and zoning issues.
My experience as a Prosecutor, Criminal Defense Attorney, Bail Commissioner and Municipal Court Judge has provided me with a unique opportunity to view our judicial system as a whole. By experiencing the many different roles, I can appreciate the challenges and responsibilities of each of the participants in our judicial system. As a Municipal Court Judge and as a Bail Commissioner, I have had the opportunity to act as a neutral magistrate in our adversarial system and I have had to balance the rights of the parties and to maintain the legitimacy of our judicial process. I am able to take my experience and the skills I have learned as a Prosecutor, Criminal Defense Attorney, Bail Commissioner and Municipal Court Judge to provide the best defense possible for my clients in our adversarial system.
